Nie wiemy, kiedy pierwsi Żydzi przybyli do Sztumu. "The Encyclopedia of Jewish Life before and during the Holocaust" podaje, że miejscowy cmentarz żydowski wskazuje na obecność Żydów w Sztumie od XVIII wieku. Pierwsze nazwiska sztumskich Żydów pojawiają się w aktach w roku 1806 i dotyczą deklaracji króla pruskiego, zezwalającej im na swobodne osiedlanie się. W 1862 roku przy obecnej ul. Związku Jaszczurzego wzniesiono synagogę. Społeczność żydowska w Sztumie nie była zbyt liczna, jej udział w ogólnej populacji wynosił około 10%. W 1880 roku w mieście żyło 97 wyznawców judaizmu, w 1895 roku - 106. Zapewne część z nich wzięła udział w powszechnej na przełomie XIX i XX wieku emigracji zarobkowej do Ameryki, bowiem w 1925 roku w miejscowości odnotowano 70 osób pochodzenia żydowskiego, a w 1933 roku - już tylko 46. W wyniku nazistowskich represji w 1939 roku w Sztumie pozostało zaledwie 13 Żydów. Podczas Nocy Kryształowej hitlerowcy zniszczyli synagogę.

According to my friend in Denmark, Stary Targ (Altmark) was the centre for the Jewish life before around 1812. Sztum (Stuhm) became first centre about 1812, when Sztum became administrative centre for the whole region. There was also a Jewish cemetery in Stary Targ where the Jews were buried before Sztum had a cemetery. My friend's mother was a Seeliger and according to my friend the Seeligers were buried in Stary Targ since 16th century. My friend have self seen the graves and cemetery. There are also films from the Mormons (LDS) with register from the Jewish cemetery in Stary Targ. But the film is very bad and very difficult to read. In one of the books "Quellen zu die geschiechte juden in Polen." (I don't remember wich one) it sais "Erbliche Überlassung eines Kämmereiplatzes an den Schutsjuden Samuel Israel in Stuhm zur anlage eines Friedhofs. 1793 - 1795". If I understand this right Samuel Israel inherited a place where he could build a cemetery. There is also films from the Mormons with registers of buried people. I don't know how complete it is. I send them to you. My friend in Denmark lived in Mikolajki Pomorskie (Nikolaiken, kreis Stuhm) before war. He told me that they never went to the Synagogue in Sztum, because it toke to long time. They always went to Dzierzgon (Christburg ), where they could travel with train. Before 1812, there was also a synagogue in Stary Targ according to my friend. This is what my aunt told me about the synagogue in Sztum: In the village Pestlin (Postolin) where Otto, Helene, Frieda and Leonhard Zimmak lived from about 1900 to 1937, they were the only Jews. When it was holidays they went to the town Stuhm who was close to Pestlin. In Stuhm they had a nice little synagogue. In Stuhm lived some Jews and there were some Jewish stores. The Jews in the neighborhood came to Stuhm and lived on hotels, shopped and celebrated bigger holidays. (Frieda Richert, born Zimmak) Otto Zimmak was my grandfather, born in Dabrowno (Gilgenburg, kreis Osterode). He married my grandmother Helen Rosenberg. The Rosenbergs are supposed to have lived in Sztum for generations. But I don't find mine there. My great grandmother Sophie Rosenberg came from Tczew (Dirscahu). According to my aunt, my grandfather Otto Zimmak was very good in Hebrew and read the Tora in the Synagouge when the Rabbi became tired. Here is what I found out from the Jewish marriage registers of Sztum 1828 - 1848: David Edel (Simson before 1812) is rabbi in Sztum and marries people between 1828 - 1842. He dies 18 Febrauri 1842 in Sztum. An Edel makes a marriage 1843. In the surrounding areas of Sztum was Abraham Arnold from Stary Targ Rabbi for the same time, 1828- 1848 (it had its own registers for this time). I hope this could help you. Fred Zimmak
